About Florida

Geography The state of Florida enjoys a wonderful sub-tropical location in the extreme SE United States. Situated on a long, low peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida is bordered to the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama.
Area: 58,560 sq miles Pop: 18,000,000 Capital: Tallahassee. Largest city: Jacksonville. Nickname: The Sunshine State. Motto: In God We Trust. State bird: Mockingbird. State flower: Orange blossom. State tree: Sabal palmetto palm. Tourism Tourism plays a primary role in the state's economy; in 2007 visitors to Florida spent over $55-billion. Walt Disney World, a massive cluster of theme parks near Orlando, is one of the world's leading tourist attractions; Universal Studios, a combination theme park and film and T.V. production facility and many South Florida attractions draw millions yearly.

Famed Beaches . . . such as those at Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach County, attract hordes of vacationers every year. With more than 4,000 sq mi (10,360 sq km) of inland waterways and the ocean readily accessible from almost anywhere in the state, Florida is also a fishing paradise.
Other attractions include Everglades National Park with its unusual plant and animal life, Palm Beach, with its palatial estates, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach which possess not only world-class shopping-facilities, great beaches and fabulous night life but also provide spectacular ports of embarkation to the Bahamas and to the Caribbean for all the major cruise-lines of the world. This also includes Royal Cunard Cruise Line's magnificent new 'Queen Mary 2' from its winter home-port berth at Port Everglades.
Agriculture Famous for its citrus fruits, Florida leads the nation in the production of oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, and market-ready corn and tomatos. Other important crops include sugarcane and many varieties of winter vegetables. Cattle and dairy products are important, as is commercial fishing, with the daily catch including crabs, lobsters, shrimp.
Kennedy Space Center No reference to Florida would be complete without mention of the Kennedy Space Center. Located 45-minutes drive east of Orlando, it can also be reached by direct, convenient, drive up Interstate-95 from Broward County and Palm Beach County (driving time depending upon point of departure). Nowhere else can you see, touch and hear more about the wo rkings of America's space program - or get so close to the amazing machines that launched a nation into space and kept it there for more than forty years. Visit the new Astronaut Hall of Fame where proud American Astronauts won the space race as they rode into history aboard Apollo, Gemini and Mercury spacecraft.
